Biography

I-Cheng (Edison) Liu is a Taiwanese cellist known for his compelling, well rounded artistry as both a soloist and chamber musician. He began studying the cello at age fourteen and quickly distinguished himself through a natural musical voice and expressive depth.

I-Cheng graduated from The Juilliard School in 2024 with a Bachelor of Music degree and continues his graduate studies there. His principal teachers include Natasha Brofsky and Clara Kim at Juilliard, as well as Ben Hong, Assistant Principal Cellist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He has also worked with many of today’s most respected cellists, including Lynn Harrell, Joel Krosnick, Jens Peter Maintz, Li-Wei Qin, and Danjulo Ishizaka.

In 2022, I-Cheng was awarded First Prize at the International Harrell Dungey Cello Loan Competition. He performs on a cello made in 2008 by American luthier Christopher Dungey, originally commissioned by the legendary cellist Lynn Harrell as a dimensional copy of his 1720 Montagnana cello. The instrument became Harrell’s primary touring and concert cello and continues its artistic journey in I-Cheng’s hands today. His strings are generously sponsored by Pirastro, with sponsorship renewed through 2026 and beyond.

An active chamber musician, I-Cheng was selected for Taiwan’s Eslite “New Voices” Young Chamber Music Competition in 2025, earning featured performance opportunities. That same year, he joined the Taiwan Performing Arts Association, performing alongside Juilliard faculty violinist Joseph Lin and fellow Juilliard alumni. In the 2026 season, he will appear as a guest artist with the Taiwan Resonance Music Society and the Changhua Chamber Music Society, touring with violinist Ming-Feng Hsin.

Before pursuing his studies in the United States, I-Cheng built a strong musical foundation in Taiwan. Beginning in 2015, he won Taiwan’s National Music Competition in both cello and piano trio categories for four consecutive years. He served as principal cellist of his school orchestras and toured internationally with the Asian Youth Orchestra.

His festival appearances include the Taipei Music Academy & Festival (TMAF), the Mozarteum Summer Academy in Salzburg, the Borromeo Music Festival in Switzerland, the Konturen Festival in Germany, and the NTSO International Youth Orchestra Summer Festival. He received full scholarships to TMAF in multiple years and was featured in a 2019 performance at the Chimei Museum, sharing the stage with cellist Lynn Harrell and violinist Cho-Liang Lin.

I-Cheng’s artistry has drawn praise from distinguished musicians and educators. Li-Wei Qin of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory noted, “I-Cheng’s music arises naturally and is irreplaceable.” Chu-Chuan Liu of TNUA remarked that his performances “transcend the music itself, communicating passion and enthusiasm with clarity.” Francis Gouton of the Musikuniversität Trossingen described his playing as “engaging and inspiring,” while Wei-Ping Chen of the Shanghai Conservatory praised him as a “brilliant young musician destined for success.”

Beyond the concert stage, I-Cheng is deeply committed to community engagement and nonprofit music education. He has given outreach lectures and performances in underserved rural areas and has participated in charitable concerts in medical centers, including Mount Sinai Hospital. Through both performance and education, he strives to build cultural bridges, sharing Western classical repertoire while representing the artistic voice of Taiwan on the international stage.
